There has been a new trend the last few years to allow web hosting clients to choose their web hosting location or for web hosting clients to go with hosting locations closer to them.
Does it matter where you host your website?
It could, depending on what type of business you are in.
When Does Hosting Location Matter?
Hosting Location is important when your website is targeted geographically. For example, let us say I want to start up a website about my favorite Canadian sports team. I build a great internet site, the community around it is super popular but I host the website in the UK.
Why host it there?
If you have the option, bring your website visitors closer to your content. By going with a web host in Canada – you can bring your site visitors physically closer to the server they are trying to reach.
Think of it as a plane flight. If you are going from New Jersey to New York – you do not want to be taken to San Fransisco and Los Angeles in the middle of it. It does not make sense to go that far when you could probably walk there faster. Hosting location is just one more way you can make your website better than your competitors.
What if Hosting Location Does Not Matter?
The situation where hosting location does not matter would be if your website is about a general topic – that does not depend on a fan-base only from one part of the world. However, if I am in the USA and I have a resume website up about myself – I would still probably choose US hosting, at least.
