What Is Good Design?
In many people’s opinion, the definition of Design is doing a beautiful form or layout of an object. So, how is called beautiful anyway? A beautiful object for someone might not be beautiful for someone else. In simple note, ‘beautiful is depends upon each person’s eyes’. Anyway, this definition of design is not completely wrong, but I would like to correct it in a more perspective meaning.
Well, The definition of design is ‘The power to think, plan, and creating products/services to serve human beings in a better and efficient way’. This definition could be quite formal, In that way, I would like to simplify it to be ‘making things better’.
After this, you will wonder, then what is that so called a good design? In my opinion, good design is a creation that tends to combine the following qualities:
1. Useful
It works well as planned and required. It has the performances expected when the idea first occured.
2. The Look
It looks good! Like I said above, ‘beautiful is depends upon each person’s eyes’. But the good look will be judged by the nature of trends, culture, gender, age, ocupation, education and region. Based on this, the aesthetic of the design should be appropriate for the market we are targeting, because this is the people that the design will deal with.
3. Advantage
It must have the advantage of using it. When a products is design for business, it should provides the beneficial aspects.
For designers, there’s always a block to create good design. A designer should be able to figure it out in a given time. They have to know what the clients want and give a good result in the client’s perspective, but this shouldn’t be a problem if the work has clear briefs from the start and the designers can sketch out a good concept.
After a concept has been figured out, the designers should be able to work in a fast and efficient way. Finally, a review of design should be held to the completed result to give a satisfying products for clients. If the clients satisfied and the product has been proved to have all those 3 qualities above, this can be called a Good Design.
