3 jQuery Image slideshow plugins

Tuesday, April 1st, 2008 |

I’ve just stumbled upon these three plugins made with JQuery. Could be good tools for your next web design projects. Enjoy…

Galleria

Galleria is a javascript image gallery written in jQuery. It loads the images one by one from an unordered list and displays thumbnails when each image is loaded. It will create thumbnails for you if you choose so, scaled or unscaled, centered and cropped inside a fixed thumbnail box defined by CSS. The core of Galleria lies in it’s smart preloading behaviour, snappiness and the fresh absence of obtrusive design elements. Use it as a foundation for your custom styled image gallery. Galleria is licenced under the GPL 3.0 Licence.

Creative design - between price and quality

Monday, March 24th, 2008 |

Creative design - between price and quality“Ok, that’s cheap. Let them do the thing.”

These are words we hear too often as a service provider. I really feel helpless when I hear this. Some people just can’t think what are the consequences of buying something cheap. Yes, I know not everything cheap means bad, but normally most of them do. Let’s take an example of a mobile phone. There’re ranges of many brands, types and price. From the cheapest one to the most expensive one. Even if you buy the cheap one, you can still have the basic features like make phone call, text messaging, polyphonic ringtones, camera, etc. But if you buy the one with higher price, you should be able to do more thing with your mobile, mp3 player, video player, camera with higher resolution, video call, etc., beside the basic features.

In creative designs, surely the rules play. The higher you pay, the better result you get. I’ve seen many designers (or mostly college students) advertise their cheap price rather than quality. The cheapest I can see in Jakarta is Rp300,000 for a complete static website. Wow.. I mean wow.. I really love to see how the design look like :) . I can bet quality is not a concern here. The design won’t help your business. We all should notice that beforehand. (more…)

How Many Design Changes Can You Take?

Wednesday, October 17th, 2007 |

How Many Changes in Design Can You Take? This should be a very common questions every designers faced. A designer started to work on a project for a client and some of them require revisions that last forever. it never ends until a couple of months or sometimes years.

Can you imagine doing a simple web design works which is being revised for 40 times? And the work is completed after almost one year? I bet some of you do have this problem.

Some of you might have lose your mind and want to scream the hell out but couldn’t able to do it because your neighbor might knock your door and scream back at you or call the police if you do so. So what exactly the best way you should do?

This problem has definitely have lots of negative impacts. I could sum up some of them here based on my experiences:

  • Confusion in the design directions
  • Too much time and energy spent in just one work
  • Feel boring about the projects which led to worse result
  • When will I get paid?

Designing To The Web Standards

Tuesday, September 18th, 2007 |

The Web StandardsWeb standard is a general term used in developing or designing a website that affect its technical specifications, philosophy and trends. This practice is developed by The World Wide Web Consortium (W3C) with other groups and standard organizations to deliver numbers of benefits for web users.

The History

In the beginning, the internet was meant to be a place to share information for academics, researchers and the military. When internet was ‘open’ to public and became popular in the second half of the nineties, it has became a place to showcase graphic design. It was considered as an ‘online print media’. There was no CSS (Cascading style sheet) at that moment, and however it led to the abuse of HTML to show the visual presentation on the web. That was the time that table was widely used, especially when designers found that using “border=0″ could let them control the layout of a page. (more…)

New Beegamax.com is Up!

Saturday, September 15th, 2007 |

new_beegamax1.jpgFinally, after 3 years of the old Beegamax website, we’ve finished the revamp and put it online. The new site is keeping its dark/black colours to retain its style. Besides, the dark colour looks classy to me :P.

I really like to adopt nature elements to this new website. That’s why you’ll notice a slight dark green colour and leaves sketches in the background.

It is not a fully flash site as a couple of versions I did before. Flash is used in the slideshows on frontpage only. I’m trying to follow the Web 2.0 design trends here.

The website is build up using css and div tags. It’s a tableless design in back-coding. In fact, I’ve built this website without designing the layout in Photoshop first. I did it directly in Dreamweaver. Photoshop is used in creating graphic elements only. Just trying out my skills anyway :P. (more…)

Beegamax.com - Domain Transfer Completed

Monday, September 10th, 2007 |

domain.jpgWe’ve just finished transferring the domain and hosting from a Singapore provider to a domain provider in Indonesia. The domain was hosted in Yahoo Small Business before. The process is pretty confusing at the start, but after reading from the Help section, contacting Yahoo Support and seeking around Google, I found it is not that difficult to do.

I’d like to share some points to take note if you need to do domain transfer in future:

  • Make sure you have access to the domain control panel from your old registrar or domain provider
  • Make sure your domain status in “unlock”
  • You need to find the “Authorization code” or “domain secret” in control panel. Usually it’s a random characters and numbers
  • You need to have access to the “admin email” of your domain, to confirm on domain transfer

If you don’t have one of those points above, it will be pretty hard to transfer across. Thanks to my old provider on sharing this information. (more…)
