How Many Changes in Design Can You Take? This should be a very common questions every designers faced. A designer started to work on a project for a client and some of them require revisions that last forever. it never ends until a couple of months or sometimes years.

Can you imagine doing a simple web design works which is being revised for 40 times? And the work is completed after almost one year? I bet some of you do have this problem.

Some of you might have lose your mind and want to scream the hell out but couldn’t able to do it because your neighbor might knock your door and scream back at you or call the police if you do so. So what exactly the best way you should do?

This problem has definitely have lots of negative impacts. I could sum up some of them here based on my experiences:

  • Confusion in the design directions
  • Too much time and energy spent in just one work
  • Feel boring about the projects which led to worse result
  • When will I get paid?

So, what should we do to not getting so many revisions? This should be done in both client and designer sides. For client side, these actions should be taken:

  • Briefs from clients should be given as much and as clear as possible
  • Clients should make sure every revisions are come in with an overall checking, we’ve experienced that some clients will tell you just one revision at a time. For example, first revision came with changes in font type, after we sent them the design, they asked another changes in font color, and so on that came one by one. This is the thing that should be communicated to client in first hand.
  • Information needed should be given in an amount of time. It just doesn’t make sense if a client needs 6 or 12 months to hand out the company profile or product list.

For designer side, I’ll do the following actions:

  • Pull out any information from client
  • Brainstorming is needed before placing hands on keyboard
  • Grab a paper and sketch out anything you need to get started
  • Limit the design to a number. Let’s say 2 or 3 times. It’s up to you anyway

All and all, I’m not talking that there shouldn’t be any revisions required for the design, but we should limit them to just a number of times that is reasonable. For us, we do limit the changes on 3 times only. if we are not setting up a limit, I can guarantee, the number of changes can come to 30 or 40 times just for one simple projects. I’ve experienced that so many times already.

Anyway, this thought is not about benefiting the designer in one side, but on the other side, it will let client really put a mind on the works they ask us to do. Isn’t it supposed to be a two ways cooperation jobs instead of one way? Designer is working towards a better business solution for them and clients are the ones that submitting any information that is needed.
